Monastery Tour-Ostrog

Monastery Ostrog, one of the biggest and most visited sacred orthodox places, is located on the territory of the municipality of Danilovgrad, on the mountain Ostroška greda. The Metropolitan Bishop of Herzegovina Vasilije founded the monastery. He is the patron saint of the monastery, whose holy body rests in the hermitage of Ostrog for more than 300 years. Saint Vasilije was proclaimed a miracle worker and his deeds are famous even beyond the Serbian Orthodox Church. The monastery is famous for many miracles that happened here and that keep happening even today.

The name “Ostrog” comes from the archaic form of the Serbian word „oštar, oštri“ – „ostr, ostri“ (Eng. sharp, sharpens), one of the forgotten names that the old Serbs and Slavs used to generally denote micro and macro-geographical and historical places, and after Christianization, they used it also to denote ecclesiastical – historical places: beginning from “ostrog” as a “sharp end, a thread, a horn or a corner” and “ostroge” as “support, stairs or ladders” to Ostrog as the “peak of the mountain and the mountain itself”.

The oldest written records of our “Ostrog, near Onogošt, in Gornja Zeta”, whose unexplored traces could be perceived in the ruins of the site Gradac, not far away from the monastery, can be found in the documents of the King Alfonso V of Naples, in 1444 and 1454, as well as in the writings of Mavro Orbin from Dubrovink, in his work “The Kingdom of Slavs” from the year 1601.
