Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its biggest urban, cultural and financial center. Even though it is a relatively small city, compared to world capitals, it’s far more famous for the rich history and tradition. The river Miljacka flows through the city, and the source of the river Bosna is also in the immediate vicinity of the city, with popular vacation spot Sarajlija, Vrelo Bosne (eng. Spring of Bosna River). With several national and city theaters, museums and cultural institutions, Sarajevo is an important place on the cultural map of this part of European continent. The city hosts every year a series of cultural festivals with international character, where the most important ones are: Sarajevo Film Festival (SFF); Sarajevo Jazz Festival; Summer Cultural Festival “Nights of Baščaršija”; a new production Theater Festival “MESS”; “Sarajevo Winter”.
Baščaršija is Sarajevo’s old bazaar. Baščaršija was built in 15th century when Isa-Beg founded the whole city. The word “Baščaršija” comes from the Turkish word “baš” which means “main”, so “Baščaršija” is Turkish for “main bazaar”. Due to a large fire in 19th century, Baščaršija is today half the size it used to be. There are several historical objects in Baščaršija, like Gazi Husrev-bey’s Mosque and the Clock Tower. Nowadays, Baščaršija is the main tourist attraction of Sarajevo.
